In the 5+ years they’ve been around, the internationally-acclaimed Swedish garage rock/Brit pop band Mando Diao have enjoyed a healthy dose of buzz, praise and anticipation. However, the last decade pales in comparison to the 2007 roller coaster that’s creeping up the big hill one click at a time (hope you brought your barf bags, boys).

The group’s October 2006 single “Long Before Rock ‘n’ Roll” (stream) was re-released this March and the group’s latest full-length, Ode to Ochrasy, meets a U.S. re-release on April 24, 2007.

Add a spot on the 2007 Coachella Festival and a broad U.S. tour (the group’s third), and suddenly this little buzz-worthy group from Sweden is ready for the ride of its life.

Perfect Porridge had the opportunity to chat with the band about Coachella, the music scene back home and the continuing fallout from a devastating floor collapse at a January show in Umeå, Sweden.

Where are you right now?
France, Sweden, we’re all in different places. We’re having our first vacation in 5 years.

You’re playing Coachella April 29. What are you looking forward to?
It will be our first Coachella festival. We’re looking forward to the crowd, and the convincing them to preach our gospel.

Back at home in Sweden, what’s the music scene like in Borlänge?
We have actually lived in Stockholm for a long time now. But we get updates. It used to be punk and Heavy Metal, now it’s turning pop. There are some good bands there, like Montezumas. They have a great music festival called Peace & Love. This year Iggy & The Stooges is on the bill. Will be great to see that.

What’s playing U.S. gigs like compared to Sweden?
US crowds are louder, just like us. We love them. Swedish crowds whisper.

We know it totally wasn’t your fault, but any fallout remaining from the Umeå show?
They have stopped falling out of the venue, if that’s what you mean. 15 minutes after our set begun, the floor collapsed and the crowd fell 7 feet down to the next floor. It could have been a terrible disaster, but the fans got away with broken arms and legs. Our fans are strong and wonderful.

Do you have a date set yet for a make-up show?
Still looking into that, but one way or another we will find the right time and place.

A few years back you played a show here in Minneapolis at the Triple Rock in front of only a handful of people, but you guys rocked out like it was a packed club. People are still talking about your performance. What’s your mindset when you play a rare empty club?
Oh, great. Well, this is the thing…we play every show as it’s our last. It’s like we remind ourselves not to take anything for granted. That everything could go, anytime. It makes you free and keeps you fighting for your life.

What are you listening to these days?
All the fans in the US crying out to get us across the pond.

We also had the chance to conference with the boys of Mando Diao, to discuss their new album, the story behind the name, the draw of Swedish rock, and their favorite bands. Interview, Video, & Download after the Jump!

Can you guys introduce yourself? Where are you guys at right now?

OK, we have Gustaf Norén (lead vocal/guitar), Björn Dixgård (lead vocal/guitar), Mats Björke (Organ/Piano), Samuel Giers (drums) and CJ Fogelklou (bass) and we're pretty spread out right now on a conference call. First vacation in 5 years. It's crowd free. Strange feeling.

I've heard that the name Mando Diao came to Bjorn in a dream, what was that dream like? Do you find alot of inspirations in dreams?

Either it was a dream or Björn dreamt it was a dream. In any case, as the story goes, it was a goblin who popped up saying his name was Mando Diao. At the time it didn't mean anything, but now it means a lot, to a lot of people. In UK one reviewer said that in despite of Mando Diao, she loved Mando Diao. Maybe she had had the dream too. Generally our inspirations from dreams comes from dreams we dreamt when we were like ten.

Your music is fairly diverse and accessible, I feel you could be transplanted in the NY scene or anywhere in the UK and enjoy overwhelming success. What would you say your major influences are? Is there a certain period of music that you look to for inspiration?

Our influences right now is not music, but rather the world we live in and the people we meet. So many interesting and amazing stories. We come from pretty diverse music experiences but in school we found out that we all had the Beatles in common, as opposed to all the rest that were in to metal. That's how we begun creating our own universe. We only had each other and got very close. We're still very close and sometimes we feel that it's just us against all of them. Then we had a lot of mainstream influences like Nirvana, Motown music and country music.

How do you go about the song creating process?

Our writing process is like first comes the music, then the lyrics, and then more lyrics, and then some more music. The songs are just sketches until we record. We need to keep it fresh until then. We need to keep part of the fun and the unexpected to occur during recording.

If there was one band in history that you could do a show with, who would it be?

Apart from The Beatles it has to be The Funk Brothers.

There are so many great bands to come out of Sweden, i.e. The Hellacopters, Teddybears, TSOOL, Hives, Dungen, I'm From Barcelona, the list goes on... What do you think it is about Sweden that produces such great creative output?

We're a removed country with lot's of musicians. It's good to have some distance, keeps you different. And the government pays people not to work in factories in order for them to play music. At least it used to be that way, this is changing now. So most people play music and from there you get a lot of bands, more per capita than in other countries. Plus the fact that not everyone knows: we're build slightly different in Sweden, to fit in to instruments and mikes. The genes started to mutate with ABBA back in 1974 and now we're not fit to work in factories anymore. They shut them down everywhere, and we get the export awards instead.

Who's your favorite Swedish band that we should be listening to?
Favourite Swedish band right now?

Perhaps Johnossi.

I've enjoyed listening to Ode to Ochrasy, I really love the mix of songs; there's a variety of high-energy rock and lulling orchestral pop which makes for a great listening experience. What's your favorite track from the new album?

Thank you, that's wonderful to hear. Favourite tracks are perhaps Ochrasy, Wildfire, Killer Kazcynski, Tony Zoulias, Herr Horst – we can't pick one. We're always fighting about which is the favourite track. Could be one of the others too. What do you think?

I'm a bit partial to Ochrasy, it has a soulful spirit. It's been said that your live shows are like going to Church for fans, why do you think that is?

Because we preach some kind of gospel. You can come as you are, dead or alive. If you're dead you will rise up, and if you're alive you will fall in love, and then eventually die of course, until the next set. But you know, we just give it all, all we got. We play every gig as it's our last, or our first, as if we have to get the brother who hates us, to go: OK, I give up. No sisters hates us though… But still, every show, every single time, we go in and we start from scratch.

THE NEW CD FINISHED
It’s going fast now for the band from Borlänge Mando Diao.

Mando Diao has a new studioalbum recorded and done. The theme is Dalarna (the region where Borlänge is situated) beautiful women, snaps and baths as ingredients. But it’s not certain that the record will reach the CD-buyers.
- We don’t know. It might never be released, says the singer Gustaf Norén,

It has gone fast, really fast for the band from Borlänge Mando Diao the last year. The record “Ode to Ochrasy” was released last autumn and the group has not been lazy since then. After the success in Sweden last winter with a “Grammis” and also price for the best live band in Sweden at P3 Guldgala, an industrious touring in for example Great Britain, Germany and the US has been on the program.
- We have been home six days the last three months, says Gustaf Norén, one of the singer of the group and a frontperson.
The reception among the bandmembers no one knows.
- We don’t know. There have been people at the concerts but everything goes so fast. It’s like looking out through the window and the speed is 150-160 km/h and you can’t see any details. That’s how it feels like, says Gustaf Norén.
- That’s a part of the tactic. Just going with the flow, to deliver, says the other singer of the band Björn Dixgård.
- We’ve played constantly for seven years and the autopilot started somewhere in 2003. Since then I’ve only been a shadow of the one I used to be, says Gustaf Norén who likes to talk, often and a lot.

Guest at Conan O’Brien
One of the many commissions along the way has been a performance at the Conan O’Brien talkshow in the US.
- I shall report how it went when the career is over. It felt good but I haven’t reflected over it at all. We were on a plane heading home for Europe two hours after the gig to play in England, says Gustaf Norén.
After the summer the group has sat up a stop. “Then there is nothing waiting”, like the bandmembers say.
- It feels like we’re gonna lay down in bed and like read “Utvandrarna” and meditate for a couple of months after seven years of constant work, says Gustaf Norén.

New record
But it won’t be totally quiet. Despite the tough tempo the group has had the time to record a new record. With a slightly new direction.
- The three earlier records are very much Borlänge to us. But this record is very much “Dalarna”. You know the nature, like Evert Taube. The singing and the dancing, all the beautiful women, the snaps and the bath.
A little bit of Mando Diao in a Zorn kind of way?
- Yes, exactly. Very folkloristic, says Björn Dixgård.
But how concrete are the plans of releasing the record?
- That’s up to EMI (the recordconpany). We will give the record to them any day now and they can release it when they feel like it, says Björn Dixgård.
The title of the album is “Never seen the light of day”.
- We have given it that title because we don’t know if it will be released at all. And it’s it a picture of Sweden where the darkness is very representative and the light is very desirable, says Gustaf Norén.
- But it’s not sure that anyone will ever hear it.
